mbers and guests
Hi Ladies:
\nI have interest in trying again
to travel to the Buffalo and White rivers for some kayaking/camping origi
nally scheduled before you-know-what changed our plans this year. Surely
2021 will be kinder to us! Here’s hoping!
\nThe itinerary would be
similar to 2020’s with a couple of possible changes. Some members have ex
pressed interest in traveling more miles daily in order to have the bulk o
f our time at our primary destinations…the Buffalo and White rivers.
So I’m asking for any who are interested to join a conversation on Meetup regarding (1) How far per day are you able/willing to travel (2) What other activities in the beautiful state of Arkansas interest you and (3) Do you even still have interest in kayaking these gorgeous rivers and making at least 1 stop in (also gorgeous) northeast Texas?
\n****Per c urrent guidelines this may or may not be a TOWN sponsored event ****

\nWhat: Camping and Paddling and Cook out
\nCamping When: June 8 – June 11
\nPaddling When: Thursday\, June 10
\nMariaV will be staying at the Buescher SP (Smit hville) from June 8 to June 11 and decided to extend this invitation to th ose that like to paddle and eat well.
\nPaddling would be scheduled to start unloading the kayaks at 9:00 am. In the map attached there are t wo put-in options\, but considering the time factor\, the best choice for that day is Hidden Shores. The take-out point would be Vernon Richards R iverbend Park. This is about a 5 mile paddle which should take 2 to 3 hou rs.
\nAfter the paddle\, we can all go back to Buescher SP and have a cookout. Those that want to stay at the park\, there seem to be sites a vailable. Maria is staying at Oak Heaven Circle\, Cabin #3. If you want to go home\, the drive to Austin is less than an hour.
\nMore detail ed plans to come\, I am trying to get an idea of how many would be interes ted.

\nThis park has been si gnificantly restored since I visited it the last time. It has a pier in a ddition to the boat ramp and the beach has been cleaned and filled with sa nd. The water looks very inviting for a swim after the paddling. There i s an island in the middle of the lake that is about ¾ mile from the shore\ , depending on the wind factor\, we can paddle around the island — or if i t is too windy\, we can just follow the coast line.
\nThere are picn ic tables under majestic trees and on weekdays we don’t have to worry abou t crowds or boats hustling around. If you prefer to hike\, there are also several trails in the park. Invite your hiking buddies and join us for a great time.

Ladies….let’s do a ca
mpout at Mineral wells SP in September. I’ve not stayed there but a drive
-by has peaked my interest! Marie W has suggested Plateau camping area for
the best kayak launching at Lake Mineral Wells.
\nI would like to al
so kayak (weather permitting) at nearby Possum Kingdom lake to Hell’s Gate
. Last time we were there Flo\, Gloria and I rented boats from the marina
. As we get closer I’ll check to see if that’s still a possibility.
\nOthers of you may know the “trailway” for biking opportunities.
\nH
ope to see you there!
What: A 28 mile bike ride on t he Lake Mineral Wells Trailway\, a Rail to Trails corridor originating fro m the historic Weatherford\, Mineral Wells & Northwestern Railroad
\nLeader: Diane Nunez
\nWhen: Saturday\, 9/24 8:30AM
R SVP: Meetup
\nDetails: the trail surface is asphalt and finely crushed limeston e and with the exception of a handful of short spots that are soft gravel or sandy\, it is an easy ride. From Mineral Wells State Park the trail hea d is in the amphitheater parking lot. The park trail that gets you to the Trailway is about a half mile and steep. There may be spots on it that are washed out or sandy\, so ride it cautiously.
\nWhen we get to the Trailway\, we will be turning left heading to the town of Garn er. It is 3.1 miles to Garner and 10.9 miles from Garner to Weatherford. I n Weatherford \, we will arrive at Cartwright Park and Sunshine Lake. We w ill check out the park and the lake to determine if we want to take a swim . You can bring a snack and we will stop for a rest in Cartwright Park. If the group wants breakfast or coffee\, we can stop at the Garner Cafe sinc e it is very close to the trail. Round trip is 28 miles.< /p>\n
If some riders want to add more mileage\, when we pas s by the trail to the State Park\, we can continue on the trailway to Mine ral Wells which is 5.8 miles one way which would make the total mileage cl ose to 40 miles. The website states that the trailway is closed from FM 11 95 to the Vietnam Memorial\, but there is conflicting information about wh ether the trail is passable. In Mineral Wells\, we will turn around and co me back to the park.
\nRules: A bike h
elmet is required\, if you show up with no helmet\, you cannot ride with u
s. Bring more water than you think you will need and drink plenty of water
the day before the ride. High temperature on 9/24 is projected to be 87 d
egrees.
\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult family member and
able to ride the entire mileage. We may not have cell service on the trail
Know your limits – this is a no dro p ride but only if you have matched your skill level with the planned mile age.

The park management only allows 2 vehicles per site. Th is will require some planning and compromising\, but it will be all worthw hile. Hook ups for RVs are in the opposite side of the park and must be re served separately.

South Africa is famous for the “Big Five” game animals: lions\, elep hants\, leopards\, rhinoceroses\, and buffalo\, which can be found in vari ous national parks and private reserves. \nI have gotten to know a local land o wner out there who would love for us to camp at her place. Nothing fancy\, but a place to pitch a tent\, and practice “becoming an outdoors-woman”. We will not have utilities\, but she will provide a camp bucket type potty in a tent for privacy\, for the tenters. If you have an RV\, you may boon dock (dry camp). $20 per night to camp (tent or RV). Weather is always unp redictable\, but early April should be fairly cool and comfortable at nigh t. She has an area to sit and cool off during the day down by the river. I t is also a good kayak take-out spot.
\nHotels have bee n booked for quite some time\, and RV campgrounds will be packed. It will be very difficult to get multiple camp sites at any state park\, so that o ur group can be together. We can go early or stay late\, and kayak a beaut iful stretch of the South Llano River while we’re there. Star watching sho uld be great as the skies are very dark over Junction!
