Monthly Meeting, October 24
Oct 24 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Monthly meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month. The location is the Northwest Recreation Center at 2913 Northland Dr, 78757. Enter the front doors, look left, and you will see and hear us.

Visiting begins at 6 pm with our business meeting following at 6:30. Our speaker begins at 7.

Our agenda is typically the following:  bring your brown-bag dinner or a snack; we gather at 6 pm & socialize; 6:30-7:00 greetings, introductions, business, outings reports and planning; 7- 8 speaker; 8 – 8:15 adjournment and cleanup.

Our speaker is Lucien Ball, the City of Austin Environmental Program Coordinator for Fire Management.  Luke will talk about the conservation property, why fire is important to the land, the practices used to manage wildfire, and personal wildfire safety and home protection.   Interestingly, Fire Management is part of the Austin Water, Wildlife Conservation Division.

Lucien (Luke) Ball began his career in wildland fire management in 1998 with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.   During his time in Federal firefighting service, he participated in wildfire suppression, prescribed fire, and emergency incidents in 24 states.  In 2011, Luke began working as the Fire Management Coordinator for the City of Austin.  He now assesses fire danger, prepares fire response plans, implements fire prevention and mitigation actions, and conducts prescribed fire treatments for the Wildland Conservation Division and its partners.

Join us and bring a friend!

Our November meeting will be our pot-luck celebration with the election of new Board members.  Remember to bring clothing and outdoor equipment you no longer year.  This is our free exchange.  Bring clothes or toys and take home something new to try – for free!

Kayaking Lady Bird Lake
Oct 25 @ 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Time for kayaking!

Lifejackets/PFDs are mandatory for this outing!

We meet at the Rowing Dock on the s. shore of Lady Bird Lake, behind Zilker Park (www.rowingdock.com) between 5:30 and 6, planning to be on the water by 6 pm in the sleek new boats with great seats and working footpegs.  $15 (cash preferred) will rent your boat, paddle, and lifejacket as we head upstream toward Tom Miller Dam, or downstream to admire the skyline and downtown buildings.

If you are new to TOWN or haven’t been out with us in a while or have an afternoon open, you can’t find a better way to enjoy the heart of Austin than on a cool, leisurely paddle on Lady Bird Lake.  Two hours of scenery, sights, and enjoyable chatting to your fellow-TOWNies and their guests, followed by a social hour enjoyment on dry land at venues such as Shady Grove, Maudie’s, Rudy’s Barbecue . . . and the Four Seasons.  Not kidding, but not usual, either.

If you have your own boat, you can put in behind the Rowing Dock at no charge.  We will help you tote it from your car to the small dock.

TOWN-Austin 20th Year Reunion
Oct 29 all-day

Hey TOWNies!

2017 marks twenty years since TOWN-Austin was formed.

The current TOWN-Austin Board is organizing a 20th year reunion to celebrate.  Please put October 29th on your calendar and plan to join us.

We have reserved the dining hall at the LCRA’s McKinney Roughs Nature Park.  We will have the hall officially from 8 am to 5 pm.  A catered lunch and park entry fees will be covered.   There will be hiking, lots of visiting, and photos to share.

We will provide lunch times, etc. at a later date.

At some point, likely mid-August, we will be asking for official RSVPs as we must provide the caterer and LCRA staff with definite numbers.

We really, really want you to join us!

And we want to celebrate the women who started TOWN-Austin and have kept it going for 20 years!
