What: Camping Trip

Where: Brazos Bend State Park (Reservations can be made on-line at https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/ starting October 5th, 2019, depending on your arrival date. Make reservations as soon as possible because this park fills quickly.

When: March 5 – 9, 2020. Be sure to bring your walking shoes, binoculars and camera. Pay due respect to alligators, which are common in some areas of the park (note – tent campers have not had any problems). Click on this link to read the alligator safety tips before you come. Do not let dogs drink or be near the water. There are designated swimming areas that close at sunset. More info will come in January or February.

Who: TOWN members and families (and dogs).

POTLUCK theme for Saturday night will be determined at a later date.

Things to do:

  • Birding: The park is an important refuge for birds, with more than 300 species recorded.
  • Explore on foot, bike, or horseback (your own horse). There are 37 miles of trails, some of which are wheelchair friendly.
  • Creekfield Lake Nature Trail is a fully paved .5-mile trail that tours a wetland area. You will find exhibits with touchable bron­zes of wildlife, an acces­si­ble board­walk and obser­vation deck, and rest areas with shaded benches. And, you will see many baby alligators in the pond, if you look for them.
  • Fish from shore at one of the lakes or fishing piers.
  • Nature Center: Stop by to learn more about the park and its residents. See exhibits on the three ecosystems in the park, as well as on reptiles that live here. The center and gift shop are open weekdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and week­ends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They usually have a live snake or baby alligator you can pet.
  • George Observatory is open on Saturdays from 3 to 10 p.m. (in Needville). The observatory is part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
  • Varner-Hogg Plantation (25 miles from Park).
