CANCELLED – Camping at Hill Country Natural Area
January 26-28
Outing Leader/RSVP: JudyL
Where: just outside Bandera
When: January 26-28
Interested? I’d like to reserve the chapa group site which has 10 rv hookups, barn with electricity and picnic tables, plus horse stalls, yes you can bring your horse!
The web site to view pictures and accommodations is thru texas Parks and wildlife. This group site is $150 per night so I would need 9 other people, at least, to commit to $15 per night.
Please rsvp if you are in – the park offers great hikes as well as biking plus Bandera is a cowboy heaven.
Please contact JudyL if interested.

Camping – Colorado Bend State Park
February 1-4, 2018
Outing Leader/RSVP to Meetup Please: email CherylC
What: Camping at Colorado Bend State Park – First weekend in Feb
Where: Colorado Bend State Park – Bend, Texas,
When: Feb 1-4, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, departing Sunday
Who: TOWNies, guests and well-behaved dogs
February 1-4 Camping Trip Colorado Bend State Park
Make your reservations asap as this hidden gem is becoming more and more popular and will fill up. As of 10/12/17 there are only 11 drive up sites suitable for rvs (30ft max) the first weekend of Feb 1-4 Thurs thru Sun, $15 per night.
This is a boondocking camp – no hookups or dump station, no shower facilities. There are several water spigots and composting toilets.
Activities: Gorman Falls, Spicewood Springs and River trails are all awesome. IF the river is flowing, there’s a possibility for kayaking. Who wants to explore a natural cave? Cave tours must be reserved in advance – $12, Discovery tour 45 mins, doesn’t involve crawling, but is still a wild (natural) cave with no installed lighting, etc http://cbcaves.com/
We’ll work out details as the date approaches. Of course, plan for pot luck dinner on Friday night, and bring something to grill on Saturday night to enjoy with left overs.
If there’s a great deal of interest and all sites are booked at Colorado Bend State Park, there are sites across the river at Sulphur Springs Camp (approx 10 miles away by road) with hookups for rvs ($28) and cabins (listed on web, plus hotel tax) for those who might want that choice. I haven’t ever camped Sulphur Springs, so could be an adventure! http://www.bendtexas. com

Karen Hoffman Blizzard will give a presentation on mountain-biking and hiking at Big Bend Ranch State Park. Highlights will include a “map tour” of the park’s layout and geological features; tips for preparing for the park’s signature event, Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest; and easy-to-access day hikes in the park.
Blizzard is a freelance writer and musician who previously worked at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department from 2006 – 2014. As a communications professional she wrote extensively about state parks, and led hikes and mountain-biking rides at Becoming an Outdoors-Woman weekend workshops. As a member of the team that implemented the public use plan for Big Bend Ranch State Park, she participated in trail building, wrote numerous articles for TPW magazine including the award-winning “Mountain Biking Dream Ride,” and co-authored the park’s Biking Guide. She also publicized and worked as a Bike Patrol member for Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, which has been produced by Desert Sports and TPWD every February since 2011. In October 2017, Texas Highways magazine published her article about hiking in and around the Sauceda area of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
