TOWN Austin Holiday Party

Friday – Sunday,  January 4th – 6th, 2019

McKinney Falls State Park, 5808 McKinney Falls Parkway

What:   The annual TOWN Austin Holiday Party will be January 4th – 6th, 2019 at McKinney Falls State Park.  We have reserved the dining hall on Saturday, January 5th for indoor games, our fabulous potluck dinner, and our lively gift exchange.

Who:     TOWN-Austin members, spouses, partners,  children, friends, and well-behaved dogs on a leash.  Please note that dogs are not allowed in the dining hall but can be outside on the dining hall patio.

Where:  McKinney Falls State Park, 5808 McKinney Falls Parkway

Details:

Friday – Generally, campers begin arriving.   Depending on interest, members can walk, bike, eat, and play games.  Campers may want to bring firewood.

Saturday –   We have reserved the group dining hall from 10 am until 9 pm on Saturday. To reach the building, pay your entrance fee; then take the second right (toward the Smith Visitor Center); then continue down the road past the parking lots for the visitor center and the waterfall.  It will be on your right and it has its own parking lot.  The dining hall is warm and will be a place to gather and visit.  Please bring your favorite games to play especially if the weather is bad.

Our potluck will be in the early evening so that we will have time for our gift exchange.  Please bring a dish to share and serving utensils.  TOWN Austin will provide paper goods, dining utensils, and drinking water. The dining hall has a refrigerator and a stove/oven but you may have to coordinate with others who plan to use them.  We have to clean up and vacate the dining hall by 9 pm.

We will have TOWN Austin membership applications and will be accepting renewals for 2018.

Guidelines for our White Elephant Exchange
Here are the rules for the white elephant gift exchange which will start after the Saturday potluck.  Please bring one wrapped gift if you wish to participate – the gift can be old, new, funny or junk or really nice.  The rules of the game are:

  • Everyone brings one wrapped gift.
  • We will draw numbers to determine the order in which we choose our gift.
  • When it is your turn to play, you can choose a gift from the pile of unopened gifts or take someone else’s gift.  Each gift can be taken only 2 times and then it stays with the owner.
  • When someone takes your gift, you immediately replace it with a gift from the pile of unopened gifts or take someone else’s gift.
  • The person who drew #1 gets the last draw and swaps with someone (other than the gifts that have been taken 2 times).

Additional notes:

  • Everyone who brings a gift is eligible to play, members and guests.
  • If you are bringing a child to the party, please bring a gift for that child and mark it as a child’s gift.  That way we can be sure he/she will get a gift they like.
  • Bring only ONE gift per person.
  • Don’t go out and buy something elaborate – hunt around your house for something useful, not useful, funny, weird, left over, or something you don’t want.

We are looking to HAVE FUN and LAUGH – not to bring home a great gift.  One ladies’ trash is another ladies’ treasure.  So, don’t expect to get a great gift out of this game. Come to have fun.  If you bring more than one gift, they will be donated to ladies who didn’t bring any gift.

Sunday – likely some walking/hiking/biking before we all pack up and head home.

CAMPING RESERVATIONS:      Call 512-389-8900 or visit http://texas.reserveworld.com/

Please RSVP via Meetup or reply  for questions, to RSVP, or to volunteer to lead an activity.  It would be good to note if you are coming Friday- Sunday or if you are only coming out for the Saturday activities.

Hope you can join us for the Holiday Party.  It is a signature TOWN event, and it is always well attended and fun!

Daytime Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake
Jan 10 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

What:  Daytime Kayaking

When:  Thursday, January 10th

Time: 11 am

For questions or to rsvp, contact:  LindaF.

It’s going to be cold and rainy coming up, then it will be sunny and fresh, then cloudy, then sunny . . . then maybe cloudy when we try out something new for those who miss the breathtaking views of the cliffs and serenity of Lady Bird Lake:

DAYTIME KAYAKING:  11 am on THURSDAY JANUARY 10th

This is a new idea from those who missed special TOWN fellowship plus kayaking, we thought we’d try this at an easier traffic-time.  We will do it once a month until our twice a month program starts in April.

The weather is changeable, we might have an early lunch if it is raining.  Let me know if you are interested so we can alert the Rowing Dock, and if you have any questions.

ALSO coming up, if you want to circle the date on your calendar, the 23rd, we will have another non-paddling “kayak” supper.  We are looking for suggestions for an accessible restaurant north of the river, since we have been missing our northern friends

Wishing you all the best for 2019,

Linda

Monthly Meeting, Tuesday, January 22, 2019
Jan 22 @ 6:00 pm – 8:15 pm

Monthly meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month. The location is the Northwest Recreation Center at 2913 Northland Dr, 78757. Enter the front doors, look left, and you will see and hear us.

Visiting begins at 6 pm with our business meeting following at 6:30. Our speaker begins at 7.

Our agenda is typically the following:  bring your brown-bag dinner or a snack; we gather at 6 pm & socialize; 6:30-7:00 greetings, introductions, business, outings reports and planning; 7- 8 speaker; 8 – 8:15 adjournment and cleanup.

Our speaker is Daphne Richards who will discuss soil bio-communities and our agri-future.  Ms. Richards, Agricultural Extension Agent, Master Gardener Coordinator, and a host of Central Texas Gardener on PBS.

Getting to Know Soil is for the passionate planter or an ambivalent admirer; the soil beneath your feet is a critical resource of nature. Consisting of billions of macro- and microorganisms that make or break plant nutrition, our soil has remarkable elements that hint at medicinal and communicative wonders.  Ms. Richards will show you some examples.

Daphne Richards received her BA in botany from The University of Texas at Austin and her MS in horticulture from Texas A&M.  Her primary responsibilities include leading educational programming in the areas of home horticulture and urban agriculture, as well as for professionals in the green industry.  She also serves as coordinator of the local Master Gardener program, training and managing over 200 very active Master Gardener volunteers.  She may be seen each week on KLRU in the award-winning television program Central Texas Gardener.   You can follow her Tweets and you can “like” her horticulture information on Facebook.  You might also catch her around town at various gardening events with Augie, her sweet little Dachshund puppy.  If you do, please say hi!

Join us and bring a friend!

Non-Kayaking Dinner – Wednesday, 1/23/19
Jan 23 @ 6:30 pm

What:  Non-Kayaking Dinner

Leader:  LindaF.  For questions or to RSVP, email LindaF.

When:  Wednesday, January 23

Time:  6:30

Where:  Hula Hut  —-  The weather for Wednesday looks crisp and sunny.  We will be meeting at the Hula Hut, a little to the south of Enfield on Lake Austin Blvd, just above the Tom Miller Dam.  If the weather is cold we can look for an inside table; to help me with the numbers, will you let me know that you are coming?

www.hulahutaustin.com

3825 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703

Ladies, if you are looking for an opportunity to enjoy some TOWNie social time together without getting wet, cold, sweaty, or having to sleep on rocks, this is a quick reminder of our second (non-paddling) kayak dinner.

So what does that mean?  Just getting together to talk about future kayaking or you can participate if you don’t kayak.  It’s just dinner.  This is organized by acclaim, and no one realized it is the day after the TOWN meeting.  Please feel welcome if you just want to enjoy fellow-TOWNies if you are in the area; you don’t need paddling blisters or wet pants to come.  We have been looking for suggestions for a restaurant across the river, so that the traffic inconvenience can be spread around.

Love winter camping in Texas, Love Pedernales Falls State Park. Let’s hope for lovely crisp temps, nice short hikes, and no burn ban so we can huddle around the campfire and enjoy the company of like-minded women.

Plan to gather for group meals each evening. Details to be determined later. Right now there are plenty of campsites available, but even in our coldest/least predictable weather months, all sites in this park will fill up on weekends.
