Monthly TOWN Austin Meeting, 03/28/2023, 6 – 8:15 pm
Mar 28 @ 6:00 pm – 8:15 pm

Join us for our TOWN Austin Monthly Meeting – Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at 6:00 pm.  We will meet at the Northwest Recreation Center or you can join us via ZOOM.

Watch for the email with instructions for jumping on ZOOM.  You will need a computer or phone with video and audio.

Our speakers are Julia and Andy Blinsky who will be talking about Purple Martins. Andy and Julia have been Purple Martin landlords in Austin for 20 years. They will discuss the life cycle of these important birds: migration, nesting, egg laying, chick rearing, fledging, and summer roosting before fall migration.

The Balinskys will talk about all facets of their work studying Purple Martins. Record keeping is important citizen science as data is reported to the Purple Martin Conservation Association each year.
They’ll ask for the TOWN group members for volunteers in any phase of Purple Martin land-lording and maintaining the summer roost.
Here is a video that Texas Parks and Wildlife made about us about 10 years ago. https://youtu.be/i5RfRs0jyzU

Wes Cooksey County Park March 29 – April 4, 2023
Mar 29 @ 12:00 pm – Apr 4 @ 1:00 pm

When: Wed/March/29 – Tuesday/April 4/2023

Where: Wes Cooksey County Park on TX-55, north of Uvalde, TX

Outing Leader: MariaV

Reservations: all reservations and payments will be made through the outing leader.

I will need to know who is attending by the end of January and have to send deposit by Feb/15. After that, you can go on a waiting list in case that anyone cancels.

Description of the park and cost: The TENT sites are close to the lake edge formed by the Nueces River dam. The view is incredible (I am including a picture in my email). There are water and electric hook-ups on each site. The bathrooms are close by. We will TENT in adjacent sites so that we can stay together. The cost depends on how many attend and how many sites we end up renting. One site will cost $140/week. Three or more people in a site is additional $5 per camper. The park management only allows 2 vehicles per site. This will require some planning and compromising, but it will be all worthwhile. Hook ups for RVs are in the opposite side of the park and must be reserved separately.

Activities: You can swim, kayak or fish at the lake. Other nearby attractions include Kickapoo Cavern SP, Las Moras Spring, Devil’s River SP and Seminole Canyon. Plenty of scenic hiking trails, and biking trails, bird watching, swimming, and tubing opportunities. More information and planning closer to the trip.

Safety issue: There is NO lifeguard at this county park for the lake. Life jackets are required when kayaking, fishing, and tubing. And helmets are required when biking.

If you want to participate in this event, go to Meetup for more details.

Include questions that will make you more at ease with attending this trip.
