Trip Report, Hiking Barton Creek Greenbelt, 9/25/22

Hi all, We had a 5.34 mile hike today on the greenbelt that was one of great concern, as the hike was filled with piles of scat that could have been bear or mountain lion or other great predator.  Fortunately, Janice walked with a walking staff and we, Janice, Kim, Debbie and I felt protected, from any predator.  After great consideration, we felt that it was probably raccoon, but we still felt protected by Janice’s unheralded and unmatched security.

Until next time….. Happy Trails, Marsha

Trip Report – Hiking Barton Creek Greenbelt, 9/18/22

Hi All!  We had a nice 4.8 mile hike today for 3 TOWNIES,  Kim , Jenny and Marsha, and 201 mosquitoes,  who came as annoying guests. Actually, they only annoyed us when we stopped, so we had water breaks on the move.  It is hard to imagine so many mosquitoes as the greenbelt was dry, but it does prove how determined those buzzing bothersome bombs are to survive.   We covered 4.8 miles today as we stayed on a more flat route to accommodate the heat and humidity.

Until next time…. Happy Trails, Marsha

Trip Report, Kayaking Lady Bird Lake, 9/7/22

Five fortunate females put in at Lady Bird Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 7th, finding the water as glassy as any of us had ever seen.

Led by Linda F; Debbie W, Anna E, Gloria W and Stephanie N all seemed glad to be there. The hanging bunches of autumn clematis on the banks smelled wonderful even at some distance, as we paddled at a leisurely pace toward Red Bud Isle.  Racing crews cut through the center of the waterway, with their accompanying coach boats buzzing up behind.  A loon we had seen on previous trips popped up for a visit, and two egrets, a heron, assorted turtles and some ducks were also present.  As we returned, downtown Austin was beautifully lit up by the setting sun against a backdrop of approaching  very dark clouds. We paddled a bit more briskly!  Fortunately, the rain didn’t arrive until we disembarked, and we enjoyed the food and each others’ company at the Green Mesquite as the storm blew through.

Join TOWN for another kayaking outing this Thursday, Sept. 15th at 8:00am at The Rowing Dock. Cost is only $15 for a couple of hours, and it’s a beautiful float. Highly recommend!  Stephanie N

What a pleasant day to be hiking!  KathleenC with Mamie and Baby, SharonS, and Jacque with Sheba met in the parking lot and the visiting began.  SharonS is a new member of TOWN Austin and a friend of DebbieB.  Our visiting included:  Spain and Kathleen’s upcoming three week walking the El Camino de Santiago with her daughter, having luggage transported, how much water to carry daily; tribulations of traveling – late or lost luggage, to wear or not to wear a mask on the plane, TSA long lines; Maidenhair Ferns – brown with the heat and drought but some so soft and springy as the springs rebound from our rain; Poison Ivy, the appearance, and staying far, far away from it; Pickle Ball paddles and plastic whiffle balls, where to play, what the courts are like, and eye protection; muddy trails and shoes; BOW workshops; limbs falling from trees about four feet ahead of us; puzzles – 500, 1000, and 2000 pieces, working on the dining room table and having to move it before dinner; dogs that ignore you.  Guess that’s all for this walk!

Hi All,  We had a nice 4.2 mile hike today as Jody, Debbie, Carolyn, Kim, Janice and Marsha were treated to a sauna and mosquito-filled hike. We stopped frequently for water and to admire a Texas Red-head Millipede, some other millipedes, a few Eastern Whip Tail Lizards and mosquitoes. We applied mosquito repellent and traveled on our way, never to be deterred by such a small creature.  We are TOWNIES and we laugh in the face of adversity.  It was a unanimous decision that I should shower before church due to reeking of sweat, pesticide and dirt. Never before have we all agreed on the same thing.

Until next time… Happy Trails, Marsha

Trip Report, Hiking Turkey Creek Trail, 8/24/22

Super walk today!  Four of us met – KimW, PegG, AnnaE, Sheba and Jacque – to walk, talk, and check changes in the creek.  As usual our conversations varied:  the watershed area for Turkey Creek, creek had very little water accumulated, why husbands don’t like to travel, so few muddy spots on the trail, traveling to Colorado – Greece – New Mexico – California (Red Woods) – Columbia, Family Nature Summit gatherings – hiking – kayaking – teens – families – the Ghost Ranch, high humidity feeling, spamming, visiting relatives, fostering dogs, ER visits, kayaking in Lady Bird Lake – that’s about it.  Our 3-mile walk passed quickly!

Come join us on the 31st!  Jacque

Five TownAustin women, me, PegG, DianeN, GloriaW, LindaF and Linda’s friend Brenda, from California kayaked Thursday, August 25. We gathered about 8:00am and put on the water at 8:30am. It was a beautiful morning, overcast, nice breeze and little traffic on the water. The water was high from the rain and unfortunately there was a lot of trash along the shoreline. Diane picked up some trash along the way. We kayaked toward downtown. As Linda said this was Brenda’s maiden voyage and she did well. We offered places for music for Linda to take Brenda. Linda inquired about some good Texas wines.

We saw an Egyptian Goose, that Peg pointed out, a few ducks and only a few turtles. The water was so high there weren’t many places for the turtles to sun. Afterwards, we went to Mozart’s on the water and Judy A met up with us. We visited about places people traveled or wanted to travel. It was a fun morning and so good to get together!

Hi all, It was a hot and humid sauna today as Kim, Leigh and Marsha hiked 5.0 miles on the greenbelt and entertained by rain lilies,  tit mice, toads, one squirrel and the solitary breeze that cooled us for the last half mile of our hike.  Kim and I sweated through at least 3 shirts,  or so it seemed,  while Leigh remained cool and sweat-free. Could she actually be a TOWNIE if she didn’t sweat?

Until next time….. Happy Trails, Marsha

Bike Maintenance Workshop, 08/21/22

Karen H., Janice B., and Peg G. and my biking friends, the 3 Nancy’s, joined me for a hands on bike maintenance workshop on Sunday morning, 8/21 led by Susan K., a volunteer at Yellow Bike. We learned how to change a tube, identify a worn out tire, and we all took off our back wheel and put it back on. We covered brakes and actually adjusted Nancy L’ front brakes with Susan’s assistance. We measured the gaps between chain links and discussed the tools needed to fix a chain. We talked about how to trace and adjust a cable.

If you are not a bike nerd, you probably think this sounds boring, but we had a fabulous time and learned a lot from Susan.

Hi all,  Attending our “refreshing hike” led by Marsha this morning included Kim, Carolyn, Jenny, Leigh, Jody, Janice, Debbie and Effie.  We had to proceed more carefully today since we had no canine protection present.  I’m glad to report all TOWNies completed the entire 5.1 mile hike intact with no injuries reported.  At one point one of us reported detecting what appeared to be a breeze.  After a brief discussion, we all unanimously agreed that it was indeed a breeze.  We didn’t  notice much wildlife today, only a few bikers and runners.  As usual we really enjoyed seeing fellow TOWNies to discuss various topics along with sharing and supporting one another through the ups and downs of our lives.

Until next time… Happy Trails, Effie
